Caroline Chisholm
Caroline Chisholm's picture was carried on the 5 dollar note for 20 years. When she walked around the streets of Sydney she saw many immigrants, particularly women who lived on the streets. She was given an army barracks to help get the women off the streets. The building was filthy and full of rats. At the time the governor was Sir George Gipps. Within two years she had found employment and accommodation for over a thousand women and girls.
Edith Cowan was the first woman to be elected to the Australian parliament. She lived in Western Australia. She married when she was 18 years old. Her husband was a career public servant. In 1899, women gained the right to vote. The King Edward Memorial Hospital was built becasue of her hard work. In 1921, she was elected to parliament. Her picture was carried on the 50 dollar note.
